The Slitting Process can serve as both the initial and final operation in the conversion process at ZXS. Each strip product is made to your specification. the most suitable strip supplied to your specification can best be achieved.

Slitting Edges

Strip from ZXS can be delivered with a variety of edge finishes, to suit specific requirements.

The choice of edge finish depends on the application; however, the availability of finishes is dependent on steel grade, size and tolerance. Here only standard profiles are shown, but other finishes are also available, such as bevelled edge.

1. Mill edge

Untreated edge, generally with a somewhat uneven contour. No width tolerance is normally stated.

2. Slit edge

Edge with the shearing burr not removed. This edge is obtained by slitting with a circular shear.

3. Deburred edge

Slit edge from which the burr has been removed.

4. Square edge

Sharp cornered square edge. Obtainable in widths up to 150 mm (5.905 in.). Some hardened grades can be supplied with this edge in widths up to 430 mm (16.93 in.).

5. Square edge with rounded corners

Widths up to 150 mm (5.905 in.).

6. Round edge

Edge completely rounded. Obtainable in widths up to 150 mm (5.905 in.).

7. Cutting edge

Sharp edge for die cutting. Edge hardened option for extra long service life.

What is Edge Conditioning?

Edge conditioning is the exercise of forming the edge of strip to the desired shape beyond that of a standard slit edge.  Edging contours the edge, removes the camber, twist, and coil set.  Conditioning is achieved by machining the material based upon the desired edge.  Conditioned edges are useful in industries where exposed edges of strip encounter or are handled by processes that require sensitivity.

Benefits of Slitting and Edge Conditioning

Edge conditioning provides significant benefits, including:

● Smooth edges
● Create a consistent, uniform product
● Remove sharp, dangerous burrs
● Safer handling
● Improve employee safety
● Reduce liability
● Faster and easier die feeding
● Increase productivity
● Improve formability, especially with hard steel
● Allow for tighter width tolerances (+/- .001″)
● Prevention of Edge Cracks
● Extend the Lifecycle of Steel Spring Applications
